Devils Tower, a national monument located in the Black Hills of Wyoming, offers visitors a choice of things to do from hiking and climbing to cross-country skiing and camping. The tower, which is an igneous intrusion, rises to a height of 1,267 feet. The visitor center, which is open seasonally, features exhibits explaining the history of the tower.

For those interested in camping, Devils Tower offers a KOA campground, and for the golf enthusiast, there is a golf course at the Golf Club at Devils Tower.

One may wish to visit the Circle of Sacred Smoke Sculpture. It was erected to honor the American people and designed to increase the awareness of how important Devils Tower is to the many tribes associated with it.

There are 8 miles worth of hiking trails to take visitors around the tower and through the forests and meadows of the area. During the winter season, visitors can partake of hiking, cross-country skiing, and climbing.

Rock climbing is also available at the tower except in the month of June. This closure is in place to honor the Northern Plains Indians who consider Devils Tower to be a sacred site. There are climbing guide companies available for climbers who wish to have a guide on hand.

There are many Ranger led activities available at the tower. Some of these include interpretive talks, the Tower Walk, evening programs at the Devils Tower Amphitheater, Full Moon Walks, climbing programs, the Night Sky Telescope program, and a Junior Ranger program for children. A Summer Cultural Program takes place which features speakers and performers who offer themed programs dealing with the tribes, history, and climbing of Devils Tower.

There are other nearby attractions, located within 2-3 hours of Devils Tower, worth visiting. These include Mount Rushmore, the face of the four presidents, Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln; the Fort Laramie National Historic Site; Jewel Cave, the second largest cave in the world; and Wind Cave, which is one of the world’s longest caves. Tim from allpro.com

There is a certain freedom attached to the road trip. Packing up the car and heading out on the wide open highway with the radio playing and a special someone along for the ride. Roadside attractions can be categorized as: world’s largest, historic landmarks, celebrity landmarks, music and sports landmarks and the list goes on. If you are in Cabazon, California, you will not be able to miss the huge extinct reptile creations that were used in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. The smaller of the two dinosaur has a souvenir shop in it’s belly and the Tyrannosaurus has a slide down it’s tail. If you find yourself fin Dayton Beach, Florida, you should see the International Hamburger Hall-of-Fame. It is filled with hamburger memorabilia, from a hamburger water bed and hamburger music boxes to hamburger clocks and a hamburger Harley. Cochise Arizona offer a THING. In the southern part of Arizona you will see yellow signs on the roadway advertising the THING. What is it? Find out for yourself, it costs a dollar to find out. Superman fans must see the Super Museum in Metropolis, Illinois. It is packed full of more than 20,000 Superman related items, the largest in the world. The city itself is a popular tourist attraction and pays homage to the man of steel.

What would a road trip be with stopping to see the largest ball of twine? Yes, there is such a thing and it can be found in Cawker City, Kansas. Dillion South Carolina is where you can experience a bit of Mexico in South Carolina. South of the Border aka Pedroland has a hotel, theme park, rest stop and souvenir shop that is a little funky an cartoonish with tons of Mexican eateries and shopping. The Museum of SPAM can be found in Austin Minnesota. They say Hawaiians along buy over six million cans a year. You either love it or you don’t and after visiting the museum you can treat yourself to a Spamburger in their cafe. In Mitchell South Dakota you can experience the only Corn Palace. Built with more than 275,000 ears of corn, is it an amazing sight. This corn building is functional with community events, stage shows and sporting events and is rebuilt each year with elaborate designs and murals. If you just must see a pink elephant, then head to Deforest Wisconsin. Standing guard over a service station off I-94 is Pinkie the elephant and just down the road is Sissie the cow, a huge fiberglass Heffer that stands in from of Ehlenbach’s Cheese Chalet.
